Who we are
A battle with inadequate support, services, and resources has defined our tumultuous journey through the pediatric mental health system in Canada. It has been a continuous fight, encountering dead-end paths and constant turnarounds. Despite my background as an educator since 2003, perceived advantages are overshadowed by distinct disadvantages, one being difficulty being available for my own child with complex and severe needs..
My passion lies in assisting children with disabilities and guiding teachers to tailor learning strategies for individual students. Pursuing my Masters Degree from 2017 to 2020, I vastly underestimated how invaluable the acquired knowledge would prove to be in my roles as an professionally and personally. Despite the gratifying nature of my career, it is an uphill battle when your child faces complex needs stemming from Complex Developmental Trauma. The onset of the pandemic exacerbated the situation significantly. After exhausting outpatient resources, we were eventually admitted to the pediatric mental health unit at the children’s hospital, and much of 2022 passed by in a haze of surviving harrowing circumstances and enduring the unimaginable.
Fast forward two years, and we are finally navigating towards meeting her needs better with an entire team supporting us. Witnessing glimpses of growth and change, we could not be happier. The puzzle is intricate, but several pieces are now falling into place. Our lives are now characterized by a serene and joyful calmness, brought about by the collaborative efforts of a supportive village. Families like ours require increased assistance to access crucial mental health services, especially prudent for families in crisis.
