Getting a service dog in Canada can greatly benefit people with disabilities

Ever wondered about getting a service animal for yourself or loved one in Canada? I wondered too and at first we tried to do training with our own labrador and although he can do most of the tasks, he is getting too old to be certified. Dogs are required to meet a minimum. of 36 tasks in Alberta and must be assessed yearly. Click here for the list of tasks.

Only a few agencies are certified in Canada, and even fewer offer the ability to get a service animal for psychiatric needs, as opposed to being a guide dog. There are ptsd dogs available as well, however, you have to be a Veteran of war to qualify. Therefore, your options are limited and because of sheer cost, we decided to go with Aspen Service Dogs because they work with us weekly to train our own dog, which is great because she is building a bond with her soon to be handler.
